DfE Attendance changes for Independent schools Autumn 2024
When the DfE published their changes, there was some question over whether the new list of Attendance codes would be applicable to Independent Schools. After some discussion with DfE colleagues, it has now been confirmed that the Attendance codes will also be mandatory for Independent Schools from 01/08/2024.
Independent schools have previously been allowed to edit the statistical and physical meanings of statutory attendance codes there are many differences across schools. To enable a school to follow the DfE guidance an on-demand patch is currently being developed.
Our plan is to enable Independent schools to implement this in a controlled manner rather than include this in an updated because independent schools did not have their session attendance codes locked down.
This patch should be applied following the upgrade to Summer 2024 and will contain the following …
Statutory Attendance codes
- Where existing Statutory codes match the DfE definition (Description, Statistical Meaning, Physical Meaning) – no change will be made.
- Insert Attendance code changes (including 2 character codes)
- Start Date of codes 01.08.2024
- End Date null
- Where existing Statutory codes do not match the DfE definition (Description, Statistical Meaning, Physical Meaning)
- A start date of 01.01.1900 and an end date of 31.07.2024 will be applied
- A prefix of ! will be applied to previously edited codes.
- Historical marks will be updated.
- Invalid codes Y, J, H and F and the new codes of K &Q
- If these codes have previously been used in the list of Attendance codes then
- An end date of 31.07.2024 will be applied
- A prefix of ! will be applied
Lesson Codes
- Convert all lesson codes that are linked to statutory session codes, otherwise an end date of 31.07.2024 will be applied.
- If a character has previously been used for a lesson code it will now be available to be reused. This is different from current functionality for Maintained schools.
